Keep track of what you do each day

What?  Keep track of what you do each day?  Why?

A Pastor’s job is very unique in that you don’t have a set schedule or set duties for each day.  When I worked in retail we would check the number of transactions and the total sales volume for each day to compare day to day, month to month, and year to year.  Now that I am a Pastor, I watch attendance figures, but that is not any indication of my productivity each day.  And yes, I do think a Pastor should worry about productivity.

I use a simple spiral bound notebook and each day I write down a brief summary of what I did that day.  I then type up a monthly report of the significant things I got done for the month.  This is extremely helpful in establishing what exactly it is that I do each day.  It is impossible to remember even a week later, so I keep the notebook on my desk and jot down what I accomplish.  Just a couple lines and a quick note of each task accomplished.  By the way – it keeps me accountable and no one ever questions “what exactly does the Pastor do all day”?
